Thessaloniki, an enticing city

Thessaloniki is a city with a great history and many faces due to its highly multicultural past. It is the second largest city of Greece and the most important centre of the region. Built near the sea, at the back of the Thermaïkos Gulf, it is a modern metropolis bearing the marks of its stormy history and its cosmopolitan character. These give it a special beauty and charm.
Thessaloniki was founded as an urban centre by Cassander, a general of Philip II, in 316 BC who named her after the name of the sister of Alexander the Great. The centre is laced with historic sights, from the Byzantine walls threading its romantic Upper Town to the imposing Rotonda. This is a city where old and new cohabit wonderfully: the Arch of Galerius, an intricate 4th-century monument, overlooks the busy shopping drag of Egnatia, while Thessaloniki’s most famous sight, the White Tower, anchors a waterfront packed with cocktail bars.
By night, the city reverberates with music and nightlife, powered by an excitable stream of international students and backpackers. Historically one of Europe’s oldest and most multiethnic cities, widely considered as the cultural capital of Greece, it is truly unique in the sense that it intricately marries its thousands-year-old multicultural heritage and the architectural marvels with the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Sephardic Jew histories.
You will see the top-quality architectural sights in the city: White Tower, the Archaeological Museum, the Arch of Galerius (Kamara), Rotonda of St. George, Church of Saint Demetrios and an underground mausoleum, Church of the Acheiropoietos, Church of St. Sophia, Aristotelous Square, The Walls (Fortress).
